Mosquito & Vector Management District

The Mosquito and Vector Management District Board of Santa Barbara County (formerly the Santa Barbara Coastal Vector Control District) annexed the City of Santa Barbara into their district on June 11, 2004. The Mosquito and Vector Management District is a local governmental agency providing multifaceted health and safety protection to many residents of Santa Barbara County.

General Functions

The primary focus of the Mosquito and Vector Management District is to protect the health and well being of area residents from the ravages of nuisance and disease vectors. The program directly interfaces with individual citizens to assist them in their vector related problems. The District provides mosquito abatement, roof rat control, Africanized Honey Bee and Yellow Jacket control. It also routinely monitors the environment for the vector-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, Western Equine and St. Louis Encephalitis, Lyme Disease, Sylvatic Plaque and others.

Membership

The Board of Trustees consists of eight members, five of which are appointed by the County Board of Supervisors and three of which are appointed by the City Councils of the member Cities of Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Barbara according to the provisions of the “Mosquito Abatement and Vector Control District Law” under the California Health and Safety Code Section 2022.

Qualifications

Voter of the City of Santa Barbara or a member of the City Council.

Length of Term

Two years, staggered so that terms do not all terminate on the same date. If a vacancy occurs prior to completion of a term of office, an appointment is made by the appropriate appointing authority for the portion of the unexpired term. Terms commence and expire at noon on the first Monday in January of the appropriate year.

Meeting Schedule

The Board meets every second Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room at Hope School, 3970 La Colina Road.

Time Involved

Approximately 1- 2 hours per meeting. Members may be invited to attend annual conferences throughout the state.

Financial Disclosure Requirement

Members must file a Statement of Economic Interests upon appointment, annually and when leaving office.

Compensation

Trustees receive $100 per meeting attended. Trustees are reimbursed for any District business related expenses.
