History

The Washington Fire Company No. 2 was formed in 1882, and Santa Barbara has had continual fire service ever since. The Washington Fire Company No. 2 officially became the Santa Barbara City Fire Department in 1906.

In the year 1870, Estado Street, which we now know as State Street, was a dirt thorough-fare bordered by wooden structures just inches apart. Following some devastating fires in 1874, the businessmen in town discovered that it would be wiser to provide some sort of fire protection than to keep rebuilding their businesses. It was then the first organized fire service in Santa Barbara City was born.

Pioneer Fire Company No. 1 was formed in 1874. J.W. Rich was named Foreman. While initial enthusiasm was high, the lack of any real fires saw membership declining. By 1881 the city was once again without fire protection.

Another group of citizens banded together to create the Washington Fire Company No. 2 on February 22, 1882. The City Council passed the article establishing this fire company on President Washington's Birthday and named Adam Ott as Chief.
