Field Operations Division
The Field Operation Division is the largest division within the Police Department. Its primary responsibility is to provide uniformed law enforcement service to the community.
Uniformed police officers are generally the first contact a community member has with a law enforcement agency. These initial contacts will frequently leave the community member with a lasting impression of the department, and it is our intention to make that impression a positive one. Our mission is to provide the highest quality law enforcement service in the most effective and efficient manner possible.
Field Operations Structure:
The Field Operations Division is commanded by an Assistant Chief and staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patrol is divided into eight teams of officers who work a specific "watch."
Either a Police Lieutenant or a Police Commander supervises the patrol Sergeants. Each team of officers has a specific Sergeant assigned as their direct supervisor.
Each team has one Crime Scene Investigator (CSI). They are uniformed officers whose primary function is the collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes. Evidence can include latent fingerprint searches, photography, and collection and packaging of other physical evidence. They also perform the normal duties of a patrol officer when not engaged in crime scene work.
Field Training Officers (FTO) are charged with the responsibility of training new officers who graduate from the Police Academy. They wear corporal insignia on their collar and are assigned to patrol teams based on trainee needs.
The city is divided into 3 sectors. Officers are assigned a specific sector during a 6-month assignment.
The Patrol Team Sergeants are responsible for direct field supervision of the officers. In the absence of a Lieutenant or Commander, a Sergeant will assume the title of Watch Commander. The Sergeant's primary mission is to oversee the daily activities of the officers under their direction and to be a resource for training and coordinator of field activities.
The Assistant Field Operation Division Commander is a Commander who is the adjutant to the Field Operation's Assistant Chief and has the responsibility for managing many of the specialty units within the division.
