Community Benefit Improvement District (CBID)
In 2024, after more than 50 years of serving downtown, the Downtown Organization has undergone a transformation process to be able to better serve downtown into the future. As part of this transition the organization will move from a Business Improvement District (BID) model, formerly paid to the City of Santa Barbara, to a Community Benefit Improvement District (CBID) model, assessed by the County of Santa Barbara.
In fall 2024, as part of the CBID model, property owners will pay into a pool of funds to manage the district via their property taxes.
The CBID is funded through a special assessment fee that property owners within the district’s defined boundaries have agreed to pay. The fees are then used to fund various improvement projects that typically include addressing safety and the homeless population, maintaining sidewalk and street cleanliness, improving landscaping, installing decorative amenities like lighting and art, promoting and protecting downtown’s image, managing events and programming, and providing directional sign and services.
