Safe Streets for All Action Plan

In September 2024, the City of Santa Barbara received a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning Grant to develop an Action Plan aimed at eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries while improving safe and equitable mobility for all. City Council approved the grant on October 19, 2024, and authorized execution of the agreement with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). After reviewing the draft on June 16, 2026, City Council adopted the final Action Plan on July 28, 2026. 

The City is pursuing a time extension with the FHWA to refine collision data into a public‑facing GIS dashboard, continue coordination with the local health stakeholders on traffic related traumas, and to further develop concept‑level corridor plans with cost estimates. It also allows for continued community outreach and any necessary City Council review if these efforts require plan amendments. No additional grant funding is required for this time extension.

The Action Plan delivers a data‑driven, community‑focused roadmap for safer streets in Santa Barbara. By targeting the High Injury Network, it directs investments where they will make the biggest impact. With proven safety strategies and clear accountability, the Plan accelerates progress toward eliminating severe and fatal crashes and creating safer, more accessible mobility for everyone.
