Public Outreach

The Fire Department would be happy to have visitors at the station! If you would like to set up a date please contact the Public Outreach Coordinator. We ask that you notify us beforehand due to emergency calls or training. School visits are also available. Unlike the Fire Safety House for 3rd graders this would just be a single engine to teach the students about fire preparedness without the Fire Safety House elements.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates participants about disaster preparedness for hazards that can impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to disaster training and organization to asset your family and neighbors. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

This program was developed to provide individuals and families with basic emergency and disaster preparedness education. LISTOS is a basic curriculum offered to all populations that desire to learn in an informal conversational setting. Instruction includes the following: Identifying Vulnerabilities, Creating a Communication/ Family Plan, Important Document Back-Up, Utilities Shut-Off, Fire Extinguisher Use, Basic Injury Care, Emotional Support.

The goal of this training is to better prepare local businesses, or community groups on how to operate a fire extinguisher during an emergency situation. The cost of the training will be as follows:

$120.00 for up to 10 people

$5.00 every person after

$15.00 for each extinguisher used. (Usually it takes from 3-5 people per extinguisher

*NOTE: We will bill after the training, once we have the final headcount and number of extinguishers used.

This program is designed to bring disaster education into all venues, including but not limited to, businesses, homeowner associations, community centers, etc. This program is tailored for meetings that have limited time for a presentation.  This CDE Presentation will assist in better preparing your staff, residences and/or community for any type of disaster or emergency.

The Fire Safety House (FSH) Program has been in existence for over 28 years and it serves 3rd grade students in both private and public schools. There are up to 14 schools visited during the spring semester; over 800 students participate each year. Each elementary school was given the opportunity to schedule a time. The house is an inflatable structure that has three rooms in, a kitchen, living room, and a bedroom. In each room, we teach Fire Safety pertinent to the particular room pointing out hazards like frayed electrical cords, candles burning too close to curtains or handles of a pot on the stove that are not turned inward. In the bedroom we charge smoke and the student’s practice getting down low and crawling to the window where they are instructed to roll out onto an inflated target. They then dial 9-1-1 and giving their address and the nature of the emergency. The last stop is visiting the firefighters where they learn what a firefighter looks like with their fire gear on; how they sound and what they will do when they are on scene. The Santa Barbara City Fire Department’s Fire Safety House is led by a Cathy Wright, FSH Volunteer Coordinator.

We offer Hand’s Only CPR to the community. If you would like to schedule a Hands Only CPR Session please contact the Public Outreach Coordinator. This is offered to local businesses, schools, and community groups.

The Fire Department and Office of Emergency Services offers specific presentations on all hazards. We also assist with evacuation drills at local business.
