Frequently Asked Sidewalk and Paving Questions
During the duration of a paving project, you may experience temporary delays and parking restrictions due to milling and grinding of the roadways, which will be performed in advance of the paving. In addition, the streets will be closed between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. during paving days. During this time, there will be no access in or out of your driveways between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Hours are subject to change due to weather or any complications that might occur during the paving process. Areas will be posted with NO PARKING signs. Please park outside of the posted areas during this process.
There are 1,200 sidewalks and 300 miles of sidewalks in the City of Santa Barbara which are maintained by the Street Operations and Infrastructure Management division. The sidewalk maintenance program team identifies uplifts and hazards that are reported and schedules the repair work accordingly. There are a variety of available repairs, including grinding the concrete, padding/ramping the uplift, and removing and replacing the sidewalk. Preventative maintenance is performed by our sidewalk team on a routine basis including grinding concrete sidewalks and ramping sidewalks with asphalt. The majority of our Streets capital projects involve replacing sidewalks throughout the City.
Fill out an online request form through SB Connect or download the SB Connect app to report sidewalk hazards and request sidewalk repairs.
- The Streets and Highways Code Section 5610 states requires property owners in California cities to maintain the sidewalks in front of their property.
- Under Santa Barbara Municipal Code section 15.20.090, property owners are responsible for maintaining the parkway adjacent to their property.
- Property Owners: The City of Santa Barbara appreciates property owners taking ownership of their property’s street, parkway, and sidewalk to help keep our public right of ways clean.
- The private property owner is responsible for the vegetation in the public right-of-way (parkway) between the private property owner’s land and the curb/street (unless it involves City-maintained trees), ensuring it is safe, does not block accessible passage on the sidewalk (if there is one), doesn’t obstruct vehicle sight lines and doesn’t present a fire hazard.
