Proposed Waterfront Project - Leadbetter Restroom Renovation

An additional Community Meeting will be on February 7, 2024, at noon in the Marine Center Classroom located at 125 Harbor Way on the second floor to further discuss the proposed Leadbetter Restroom Renovation.

The Waterfront Department is proposing a renovation of the Leadbetter restroom facility. The restrooms at Leadbetter Beach were originally constructed in 1969. Various upgrades to the mechanical equipment have been performed throughout the years. However, this will be the first complete renovation since the original construction.

The City of Santa Barbara has a long-standing commitment to keeping facilities code-compliant and current with ADA standards. This project will address outstanding accessibility requirements and upgrade finishes to be more comfortable and functional.

The project will address the following issues:

  • Public Health, Safety, and Security concerns initiated by first responders due to increased illegal activity by doing the following:
    • Remove attractive nuisance that provides areas to hide vagrancy and illegal activity
    • Increase surveillance for Patrol and safety of first responders
    • Create open-sight lines to discourage misuse of the facilities
  • The facility will be brought up to current building and safety codes, which include ADA accessible restroom and shower facilities, and address the following:
    • Existing structure has no accessibility
    • Nearest ADA compliant restroom is over ¼ mile away
    • Nearest ADA shower is ½ mile away
  • Preventative measures to mitigate the current failure of infrastructure of the following:
    • Crumbling walls
    • Blocked drainage

Temporary facilities will be on site and the nearest facilities at the Harbor area will be open during the construction. The project will take approximately 12 weeks.

The Waterfront Department is a self-supporting enterprise, owned and operated by the City of Santa Barbara. No tax dollars are used for Waterfront improvement projects.

The City of Santa Barbara and the Waterfront Department appreciate community interest in the Leadbetter Restroom Americans with Disabilities Act Renovation. Please contact Project Engineer, Lyn Burich (LBurich@santabarbaraca.gov) or Facilities Manager, Brian Adair (BTAdair@santabarbaraca.gov) with any questions.
