Santa Barbara Clean Energy Launching in October;
Residents will get their first glimpse of Santa Barbara Clean Energy service options this week with a mailer that outlines three new green choices. Santa Barbara Clean Energy, the City’s new locally-controlled electricity provider, will launch in October for residents. Detailed information is available online at www.SBCleanEnergy.com.
“Santa Barbarans have been asking for clean energy for more than a decade, and we are very excited to launch Santa Barbara Clean Energy this fall. To provide a range of choices for customers, there are three new options: 100% Green, Green Start, and Resilient. For the first time, Santa Barbarans can choose how much carbon-free energy they buy and make an active difference in cleaning up our air, water, and overall environment,” said Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo.
Santa Barbarans will be automatically enrolled in one of the three service options based on their current billing status with Edison. Santa Barbara Clean Energy will purchase sustainable electricity, and Southern California Edison will continue to deliver the power, maintain the poles and wires, and provide one single bill for customers.
“We want to make it easy for everyone while providing choices. To start, most people will be enrolled in 100% Green to get 100% carbon-free energy. Customers that have financial assistance through the CARE program will be enrolled in Green Start so their rates stay the same and they will get more sustainable energy. Customers that already have solar and use Net Metering will be enrolled in Resilient. The great news is that people do not have to lift a finger, we take care of the enrollment for them. If someone wants to add solar, we can move them up to Resilient and they will get paid more for the energy they generate. If someone wants to change options, they can and our team will handle the transition,” said Energy and Climate Manager Alelia Parenteau.
Santa Barbarans will have a choice in electricity options:
100% Green – 100% carbon-free energy for about $5 more/month. To make the largest local improvement for the environment, most people will be automatically enrolled in 100% Green.
Green Start – 50% plus carbon-free energy (more than Edison) at the same standard rates as Edison.
Resilient – 100% carbon-free energy and solar. Net Metering customers, or people who already have solar, are enrolled in Resilient and will get paid more than they were getting from Edison.
Edison – customers can opt out of Santa Barbara Clean Energy but they will receive less carbon-free energy and their rates will be the same as Green Start (same as Edison standard rate).
“It is exciting to be able to pay our residents more for the solar energy they generate at the start of Santa Barbara Clean Energy. We want this program to reduce pollution in our city, county, and country and be beneficial for Santa Barbarans from the start,” said Santa Barbara Councilmember Eric Friedman.
“I especially appreciate that everyone can make a difference with Santa Barbara Clean Energy. No one is excluded based on cost. Choices are offered so that we can all choose cleaner air and make a difference each day with sustainable electricity,” said Santa Barbara Councilmember Kristen Sneddon.
In 2002, California passed Assembly Bill 117 that gave local governments the ability to provide choices for electricity generation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions that pollute the air. Santa Barbara Clean Energy will launch in October 2021 with residential service. Residential customers will receive two mailers outlining options prior to the October launch and two mailers after the launch. Commercial service will begin in March 2022. Business customers will also receive four mailers outlining service options beginning in December 2021.
