Call for Proposals for the Santa Barbara K-Rail Public Art Project

The City of Santa Barbara, in partnership with the County Office of Arts & Culture, is inviting artists, creatives, and cultural organizations to submit proposals for an original design treatment for the public K-Rails (traffic barriers) that demarcate the beginning of the State St. Pedestrian Corridor at the Haley St. intersection. The winning proposal will be reproduced on a vinyl wrap affixed to the barriers and exhibited for several months beginning May 2024. The selected artist will also receive a $1,500 honorarium. Proposals are due by April 5, 2024.

"This is a cool opportunity to collaborate with the City, local businesses, and Santa Barbara’s creative community to develop artwork that adds more artistic vibrancy to the downtown area,” said Sarah York Rubin, Director of the County Office of Arts and Culture.

This opportunity is open to artists and designers from across disciplines. Applicants must be over 18 years of age and live in either Santa Barbara County or Ventura County.

The final selection will be subject to the review and approval of the City Arts Advisory Committee and City of Santa Barbara. The selected artist will work with the Office of Art and Culture on any necessary design refinements.
