WHAT’S HAPPENING: The City is applying for grant funding for design and construction of traffic safety improvements along State Street, from Alamar Avenue to Mission Street. The State Street traffic safety improvements are anticipated to include high visibility crosswalks, pedestrian activated rapid flashing beacons, new accessible curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and enhanced intersection and mid-block lighting between Alamar Avenue and Mission Street.
WHY: These safety enhancements address a well-documented collision pattern along this corridor, which carries approximately 8,500 vehicles each day. The corridor is on the City’s High Injury Network. Between 2020 and 2024, the corridor experienced 27 collisions. The City’s Streets for All Action Plan identifies this section of State Street in the top 5% of city streets on the High Injury Network. The proposed safety improvements will create a safer environment for all roadway users. Together, these safety treatments offer a high impact, data driven solution to reduce collisions and improve mobility along this highly traveled neighborhood corridor. This improvement is consistent with the City’s Vision Zero Strategy, which is an adopted policy that aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries in the City.
Thank you to all who have already contributed feedback during the Safe Streets for All Action Planning effort. We welcome continued participation—please join us at the upcoming meetings to provide any additional insights.
