Tree Watering

Trees offer several environmental and community benefits; below are some recommendations to help them thrive in hot weather:

  • Deep watering. Trees need slow, deep watering so that the water gets 12 – 18 inches below the surface. Utilize slow to apply water such as a soaker hose, drip irrigation bucket, or a deep root watering probe.
  • Water at the drip line. The optimal place to water mature trees is near the drip line, the outside edge of the tree canopy where rain would drip down from the leaves.
  • Add mulch.  Adding a 4-6 inch layer of mulch insulates and feeds the tree’s roots. Pull it back two inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
