August 16 is National Backflow Prevention Day, recognizing the backflow prevention assemblies and cross-connection control programs that help protect our drinking water. Backflow occurs when water flows in the wrong direction, potentially allowing contaminants from irrigation systems, pools, fountains, or hoses to enter the public water supply. Properly installed and tested backflow prevention assemblies help keep drinking water safe. The City's Cross-Connection Control Program monitors properties for potential hazards, requires backflow prevention where needed, and ensures assemblies are regularly tested.
