Meeting Recap: Renaming of Calle Cesar Chavez
The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) meeting on May 11 followed up on the City Council discussion on March 31, which directed the City Administrator to begin the process of considering a potential renaming of Calle Cesar Chavez. NAC members and community participants provided input on the street’s historical and cultural significance, as well as possible new names, with discussion focused on inclusive engagement and honoring cultural context.
As part of its review, the NAC considered the community request to explore a renaming, evaluated whether a change is appropriate, and reviewed proposed options and alternatives. The NAC voted to forward its recommendation to the City Council. This action does not finalize a name change.
The motion included:
- Primary proposed name: Calle Si Se Puede
- Two alternative names for equal consideration:
- Calle Dolores Huerta
- A name to be recommended by the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation
