Thousand Steps Repair Project Starts March 28

Built almost 100 years ago, the Thousand Steps beach stairway is in need of significant repair! The Parks and Recreation Department will make major renovations to the steps, including demolishing and rebuilding the lower 14 steps. Crews will replace the bottom section of the stairway and add ten new concrete steps. The new steps will extend down below the sand for better access during seasonal changes to the sand level. There will also be new handrails installed along the stairway in addition to a new sturdy concrete guard rail at the middle landing. During this repair work, the Thousand Steps will be unsafe to use, and there will be no beach access at that location. Beach access stairways at Shoreline Steps (inside Shoreline Park) and Mesa Lane Steps will be open for beachgoers while the Thousand Steps stairway is closed.
