E-Bike Safety

Body

Electric bikes or e-bikes are growing in popularity in Santa Barbara, and are a great active transportation option. If you're considering buying one (or already own one), the City of Santa Barbara would like to provide some tips and safety information to make your e-bike experience safe, enjoyable, and sustainable.

Protect Yourself

Bike riders and pedestrians are more vulnerable than cars. Always wear a helmet, bright clothing, and use lights when visibility is low.

Be Predictable

A bicyclist must follow the same rules of the road as a vehicle: stop at red lights, stop signs, etc. Show your intention using hand signals to communicate with those around you (other bikes, pedestrians, and cars).

Be Courteous

Set a good example and help ensure biking remains allowed where you like to ride.

Be Ride Ready

Check your tires, brakes, chain, and quick release levers before each ride.

Care for Your Battery

Only use the charger that came with your bike. Unplug your battery once it's fully charged. Minimize exposure to salt water or excessive moisture. Know how to properly dispose of your battery: visit HungryForBatteries.com for recycling locations!

Know the Fire Risk

E-bike batteries can start fires that can lead to property damage, injuries, or worse. Choose an e-bike with a UL listed battery, read and follow charging instructions, and keep battery away from exposure to salt water.
