 Appointment Information

• Records staff will meet you at the Records Counter in the lobby at 630 Garden Street. Please do not be late.  
• You will be viewing the plans electronically on a large computer screen.
• You will have 1 hour to view the plans. If at the end of the hour you still need time we will schedule another appointment for you.
• Plans may not be photographed. However, you may take notes. 
• Please bring with you a valid I.D. or other legally acceptable paperwork, proving ownership, if you think you may want to request copies of the plans.

Building Plan Copies

• Requests for building plan copies are processed at the time of the Plan Archive Appointment.
• If you are the property owner and you wish to request copies of the plans, please bring with you a valid I.D. and any other applicable, legally acceptable paperwork, proving ownership. We will assist you with the process of obtaining any licensed professional's permission who have stamped the plans, as permission from these parties is required prior to the duplication of the plans.
• If you are not the property owner and you wish to request copies, we can assist you with the process of obtaining the property owner's permission and any licensed professional's permission who have stamped the plans, as permission from these parties is required prior to the duplication of the plans.
• Prior to your appointment, if you wish, you can have the property owner complete, sign, date and have notarized, the Owner Approval for Plan Duplication Form, giving the named person in the form permission to obtain copies of the Building and Safety approved architectural plans of the property on their behalf. The name of the specific individual who is ordering the copies at the appointment must be specified on the form.
• If the property is in escrow, the following options apply:
  • Requests for copies can be made once the sale of the property is complete and the property is recorded in your name at the County Assessor's Office.
  • The current property owner can complete, sign, date, and have the Owner Approval for Plan Duplication Form notarized giving you permission to obtain the copies of the Building and Safety approved architectural plans of the property on their behalf.

Confirm Property is within City Limits

Before your appointment, remember to make sure your project is within the City of Santa Barbara boundaries.

Internet Connection

Be sure to have a computer, tablet, or smartphone with reliable internet access. The virtual counter appointments will be conducted using Zoom. Please familiarize yourself with this virtual meeting platform: https://zoom.us/ It's okay if you don't have a webcam, or don't wish to turn on your video during the appointment.

Prepare Your Questions

Organize and plan for your virtual counter appointment, have an agenda, and prepare all your questions in advance.

Screen & Plan Sharing

During the virtual counter appointment, both City staff and you can share your computer screen and electronic project documents.
