Nearly 40% of the City’s fleet runs on alternative fuels, including: Renewable Diesel, Hybrid, Electric, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Liquid Propane (LP).

During the Thomas Fire and ensuing debris flow, Fleet personnel worked around the clock safeguarding emergency communications, emergency response vehicles, and provided a ready line of vehicles for life saving operations.

We ensure regulatory compliance on all our vehicles and equipment, our maintenance facility, fueling stations, and emergency generators located throughout the City.

We annually identify and replace vehicles that have outlived their lifespan. We develop specifications and use cooperative purchasing agreements and State Contracts to attain the best pricing. Most City vehicles have a 12 year or 125,000 mile lifespan.

We operate and maintain five fueling locations within the City. These stations supply City vehicles with gasoline and renewable diesel fuels.

When vehicles are replaced, we prepare new vehicles by outfitting them with the necessary equipment to perform services safely and efficiently.

After testing many different brands, we selected one that reduced cost, achieved better filtration, and allowed us to maximize service intervals.

We look for every opportunity to recycle our waste and utilize recycled materials.

In December of 2016, we began using renewable diesel fuel. This alternative fuel is produced from vegetable oils and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% in comparison to fossil based diesel fuel.

We recently switched to a re-refined synthetic-blend oil that allows us to maximize vehicle service intervals while continuing to utilize recycled oil.

We are testing reusable oil filters on select City vehicles in order to reduce cost and waste, improve lubrication and filtration, increase vehicle service intervals, and reduce vehicle downtime. Independent lab testing has confirmed the superior filtration of our reusable oil filters.

We use an automated reservation system to schedule vehicles for service based on manufacture suggested intervals. We continuously track trends and look for every opportunity to maximize service intervals while ensuring safe and reliable transportation.

Our shared motor pool utilizes an automated reservation system to allow employees to quickly reserve and gain access to vehicles at three locations within the City. Vehicles selected for our pool are energy efficient hybrid and electric vehicles.
