Earlier this month, the City’s Architectural Historian, Nicole Hernandez, MFA, and former Historic Landmarks Commissioner, William T. Mahan, FAIA, were presented the John Pitman Memorial Award by The Santa Barbara Conservancy for their continuing service and dedication for being a tireless voice for preservation and the highest quality in design. The Santa Barbara Conservancy is a local nonprofit organization that was formed in 1998 by the late John Pitman, FAIA, to bring together a wide array of individuals, public agencies, and other groups concerned with historic preservation issues. The Conservancy’s mission has expanded over the years to include educating the general public on historic preservation and documenting Santa Barbara’s historic resources.

The Santa Barbara Conservancy grants the memorial award to citizens who have displayed exemplary professional dedication in the preservation of historic architecture and environment. An intimate awards ceremony and reception was held at the Pico Adobe, a Santa Barbara Landmark, to honor the recipients.
