Live Scan

The City of Santa Barbara offers Live Scan services to the public in a convenient and safe manner. The Live Scan electronically submits a digital fingerprint to the California Department of Justice (DOJ). Live Scans are used for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, etc.

Live Scan Procedure

Please follow these steps so that we may administer your Live Scan in an efficient manner.

  1. Schedule an appointment for your Live Scan by calling (805) 564-5316.
  2. Bring completed Live Scan Payment Form and the Live Scan Request Form:
    • Live Scan Payment Form
    • The agency requesting you to get a Live Scan will provide you with a Live Scan Request Form. (The City of Santa Barbara is not allowed to assist applicants in filling out their Request for Live Scan Service form. The California Department of Justice rules forbid us from assisting you on your application. If your information is incomplete or if you have a question, we must refer you back to your employment or licensing agency.)
  3. Bring your completed forms and valid government-issued photo identification with you to your appointment. List of Acceptable Forms of ID

Live Scan Fees
The fees are dependent upon the level (type) or service provided.  The City of Santa Barbara charges a $25 fee for the fingerprint rolling.  Additionally, you may need to pay additional costs for the Department of Justice processing fees.  Below is the Department of Justice's fee schedule for various levels of Live Scan services.  We cannot quote the total cost until we review the forms in person.

Live Scan Results
Once you complete the Live Scan, your digital fingerprints are transmitted to the Department of Justice and/or FBI. The DOJ is able to process most submissions within 72 hours. In those instances where a complete record is not available or manual processing is required, additional time is needed for a response. Alternatively, you may check your status by visiting https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/ or you may call the Department of Justice Automated System at (916) 227-4557 for result status. You will need to enter your ATI# (located at the bottom of your Live Scan form) and date of birth.
