Short-Term Rental Enforcement Pilot Program

Body

While short-term rentals (STR) are not permitted in most areas of Santa Barbara, they have nonetheless become a new form of visitor lodging in the City within the past decade. A short-term residential rental is a rental of all, or a portion of the residential property for periods of 30 days or less.

The Short-Term Rental Enforcement Pilot Program was launched by the City Attorney’s Office on August 1, 2023. The Pilot Program was funded by the City Council on April 25, 2023 with the goal of increasing the enforcement of illegal short-term rentals operating in the City and gain a better understanding of the type, seasonality, location, and number of short-term rentals existing in the City.

If you have concerns about a location being used for short-term rentals, you may file a complaint via our complaint form (below), or by phone. If you would like to call in a complaint, please call our hotline at (805) 897-1934

All other code enforcement complaints should be directed to Code Compliance.
