15 Recirculation Pump Start Up
The Digester Recirculation Pumps {tag nos. 1505PMP/MTR5300 & 1505PMP/MTR5400} are also called the Digester Heater Pumps. The pumps run in manual mode, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Normal operation is generally described as follows:
· Digester Recirculation Pump No. 1 {tag no. 1505PMP/MTR5300} pulls sludge from Digester No. 1 {tag no. 1505STRC5023} and circulates the sludge through Heat Exchanger No. 1 {tag no. 1505EXR5921} before returning to Digester No. 1 {tag no. 1505STRC5023}.
· Digester Recirculation Pump No. 2 {tag no. 1505PMP/MTR5400} pulls sludge from Digester No. 2 {tag no. 1505STRC5025} and circulates the sludge through Heat Exchanger No. 2 {tag no. 1505EXR5862} before returning to Digester No. 2 {tag no. 1505STRC5025}.
A complicated system of isolation valves, however, allows for numerous combinations of cross valving between “System No. 1” and “System No. 2”. Sludge can be fed to either digester or heat exchanger by either pump. Also, sludge can be re-circulated between digester while bypassing the heat exchangers.
This SOP describes Normal Operation.

- Record activity to log book.
a. Locate the Recirculation Pump Discharge valve {tag nos. 1505VLV5300E & 1505VLV5400E}. Open the valve if it is not already open. b. Locate the Recirculation Pump Suction Heater Valve {tag nos. 1505VLV5183 & 1505VLV5183A}. Open the valve if it is not already open. 2. Manual Control Start Up. a. Locate the Recirculation Pump controls {tag nos. 1505BKT5300 & 1505BKT5400} at MCC 5 {tag no. 1708MCC7236} in the Digester Control Building. b. Turn the Recirculation Pump Main Breaker {tag no. 1505BKR5300 & 1505BKR5400} to ON. c. Switch the Recirculation Pump Control Power Switch {tag no. 1505HS5300A & 1505HS5400A} to ON. d. Switch the Recirculation Pump HOA Switch {tag no. 1505HS5300 & 1505HS5400} from OFF to HAND. e. If for some reason a failure light {tag nos. 1505YL5300A & 1505YL5400A} is activated, push the Reset Button {tag nos. 1505HS5300C & 1505HS5400C}. 3. Observe Digester Recirculation Pump Operation: a. Listen for excessive noise or vibration. b. Check for oil or process fluid leaks. 4. Record Data to Operator’s Log Book: Record Digester Recirculation Pump Activities to the log book with other entries for the day. Include the following in the entry: · Operator(s) that performed the Digester Recirculation Pump SOP. · Note condition of equipment, piping, valves, etc. · Note any unusual conditions with flows, levels, odors or other process issues. · Note any damage, wear, or required maintenance on equipment. |
