12 WAS Pump Start Up
Two 10 HP, variable speed, non-clog type pumps each with a capacity of 3750 gpm make up the WAS Pumping System. The Lead/Lag status of the pumps is manually changed by the operator each month.
The WAS Pumps serve two main functions:
- Pump the excess biomass from the Secondary Clarifiers to the Solids Handling facilities for further processing (normal operation)
- Drain the Secondary Clarifiers
- WAS: Waste Activated Sludge
Watch for open tanks, vaults and channels. If working on or near equipment, watch for rotating parts.
- Verify that suction valve(s) are open. Verify that discharge valve(s) are open during normal operation.
- Verify that suction valve(s) are open. Verify that drain valve(s) are open when draining clarifiers.
Inaccurate pump speed setting at the VFD.
Operator 1, knowledge of secondary treatment process and equipment controls.
- Record activity to log book.
- Compare flow rates with the SCADA target rate.
1. Check Valve Status :
a. Locate the Suction Valve {tag nos. 1205VLV2100 & 1205VLV2200}. Open the valve if it is not already open.
b. Locate the Secondary Drain Valve {tag nos. 1205VLV2679N & 1205VLV2679O} . Close the valve if it is not already closed.
c. Locate the Discharge Drain Valve {tag nos. 1205VLV2672 & 1205VLV2672A}. Close the valve if it is not already closed.
d. Locate the Discharge Isolation Valve {tag nos. 1205VLV2100A & 1205VLV2200A}. Open the valve if is it not already open.
e. Locate the Sampler Tube, which is located on the discharge piping. Open the valve for the pump that is to be put into service. Close the valve for the pump that will not be in service.
2. Prepare Pumps for Start Up at Control Panel:
a. Locate the stantion with the local and Lockout Switch {tag nos. 1205HS2100A & 1205HS2200A} and HOA Switch {tag nos. 1205HS2100 & 1205HS2200}. Verify that the Lockout Switch {tag nos. 1205HS2100A & 1205HS2200A} is in the ON position and the HOA Switch {tag nos. 1205HS2100 & 1205HS2200} is in the AUTO position.
b. At the Control Panel, locate the Main Breaker {tag nos. 1205FBK2100 & 1205FBK2200}. Flip the switch to the ON position.
c. At the Control Panel, locate the VFD Breaker {tag nos. 1205FBK2100A & 1205FBK2200A}. Flip the switch to the ON position.
d. At the Control Panel, locate the HOA Switch {tag nos. 1205HS2100 & 1205HS2200}. Flip the switch to the AUTO position.
e. Verify that the Pump On Indicator Light {tag nos. 1205YL2100 & 1205YL2200} is on.
3. Start Up Pumps from SCADA (Automatic Operation):
a. At the SCADA Workstation, verify that the pumps are in AUTO mode.
b. Verify the lead/lag status of the pumps.
c. Enter the target wasting rate.
4. Start Up Pumps from SCADA (Manual Operation):
a. Locate the VFD HMI {tag nos. 1205HMI2100 & 1205HMI2200}.
b. Start the pump and adjust the pump speed.
c. Locate the Pump Run Indicator Light {tag nos. 1205YL2100A & 1205YL2200A} and verify that it is ON.
5. Observe WAS Pump Operation:
a. Listen for excessive noise or vibration.
b. Check for oil or process fluid leaks.
6. Record Data to Operator’s Log Book: Record WAS Pump Activities to the log book with other entries for the day. Include the following in the entry:
· Operator(s) that performed the WAS Pump Start Up SOP.
· Note condition of equipment, piping, valves, etc.
· Note any unusual conditions with flows, levels, odors or other process issues.
· Note any damage, wear, or required maintenance on equipment.
- Update log book.
- Update maintenance records (if applicable).
- Report any maintenance or attention that is required.
- WAS is pumped from the Secondary Clarifiers to the Solids Handling processes (normal operation).
- The Secondary Clarifiers are drained.
