12 Secondary Polymer
The Secondary Polymer System is not used during normal Secondary Treatment operations. A Polymer Solution is introduced to the Activated Sludge Channel, which is located between the Aeration Basins and the Secondary Basins. The Secondary Polymer System equipment is located in a small out building near the Secondary Clarifiers.
The Secondary Polymer System is typically used during one of the following conditions:
- Settling problems
- High turbidity
- High floc conditions
- Bulking issues
Watch for open tanks, vaults and channels. If working on or near equipment, watch for rotating parts.
Clogs in the polymer pump or valves.
Too high doses of polymer can overdose the system.
Operator 1, knowledge of secondary treatment process and equipment controls.
1. Mix Polymer : a. Locate the Polymer System HMI {tag no. 1206HMI2100} and turn the Main Power switch to ON. b. Turn on the Mixing Chamber {tag no. 1206MXR/MTR2100}. This opens the Dilution Water Isolation Valve {tag no. 1206VLV2677} and Starts the Mixing Chamber Motor {tag no. 1206MTR2100}. c. Start the Polymer Pump {tag no. 1206PMP/MTR2200}. Prime the pump if necessary. The progressive cavity pump is a self priming pump, however, polymer can clog the valves and the pump may require a forced prime. Use a syringe to pull air from the pump. d. Increase the pump speed and stroke ( if required to get the pump running). The controls are located on the back of the pump. e. Once the pump is running, reduce the pump speed to approximately 20% - 30% and reduce the stroke to approximately 50%. Anything higher will just overdose polymer to the Secondary process and waste chemical. Secondary Polymer System - Shutdown: 1. Turn off System : a. Turn off the Polymer Pump {tag no. 1206PMP/MTR2200}. b. Let the Mixing Chamber and Dilution Water continue to run for approximately 10 – 15 minutes. This will purge any remaining polymer from the mixing chamber and flush polymer from the piping. c. Turn off the Mixing Chamber {tag no. 1206MXR/MTR2100}. d. Locate the HMI {tag no. 1206HMI2100} and turn the Main Power switch to OFF.
Record Data to Operator’s Log Book 1. Record Secondary Polymer System Activities to the log book with other entries for the day. Include the following in the entry: · Operator(s) that performed the Secondary Polymer SOP. · Note condition of equipment, piping, valves, etc. · Note the approximate duration that polymer was fed to the clarifiers. · Not quantity of chemicals on hand. · Note any unusual conditions with flows, levels, odors or other process issues. · Note any damage, wear, or required maintenance on equipment. |
- Update log book.
- Update maintenance records (if applicable).
- Report any maintenance or attention that is required.
Abnormal conditions in secondary treatment are corrected.
