Title

11 Primary Sludge Pump Start Up (Clarifier Drain)

The Primary Sludge Pumps serve two main purposes:
  • Transfer of sludge from the Primary Clarifiers to the Gravity Thickener.
  • Drain sludge from the Primary Clarifiers to the Gravity Thickener
During normal operation, the Primary Sludge Pumps provide a continuous removal of sludge from the Primary Sludge Hoppers to the Gravity Thickener. Pump operation is controlled by SCADA and is interlocked with the opening and closing of the actuated Rotork sludge valves.  Click here for the Primary Sludge Pump Start Up (Normal Operation) SOP.
During abnormal operation, the Primary Sludge Pumps may be used to drain the Primary Clarifiers for maintenance or servicing.

Health & Safety Warnings
Health & Safety Warnings:

Watch for open tanks, vaults and channels. If working on or near equipment, watch for moving parts

Cautions
Cautions:

Ensure that the correct Primary Sludge Transfer and Drain suction and discharge valves have been opened and/or closed before starting up the pumps.  Drain valves must be open and trasnfer valves must be closed during the sludge transfer process.

Each Primary Sludge Pump is equipped with the following piping and valves:

  • Suction Transfer (grey piping)
  • Discharge Transfer (grey piping)
  • Discharge Drain (white piping)
Personnel Qualifications
Personnel Qualifications:

Operator I, knowledge of primary treatment process and SCADA controls.

Equipment, Supplies, Required Tools
Equipment, Supplies, Required Tools:

Valve keys or other tools to open and close valves.

Quality Control/Quality Assurance Activities for the Procedure
Quality Control/Quality Assurance Activities for the Procedure:
  • Record activity to log book.
  • Self-check of  drain and transfer valve manipulation.
  • Monitor process to make sure flows are reaching the Gravity Thickener.
Procedure
Procedure:

1.     Open and close valves: Step 1 takes place “downstairs” at Gallery #2.  Primary sludge piping and valves are grey and located above the drain piping.  Drain piping and valves are white and located below the primary sludge piping.

a.     Open the Primary Sludge Drain Discharge Valve {tag nos. 1102VLV1100D & 1102VLV1200D}.

b.     Open the Primary Sludge Transfer Suction Valve {tag nos. 1102VLV1100 & 1102VLV1200}.

c.     Close the Primary Sludge Transfer Discharge Valve {tag nos. 1102VLV1100A & 1102VLV1200A}

2.     Prepare Primary Sludge Pumps: {tag nos. 1102PMP/MTR1100 & 1102PMP/MTR1200} Step 2 takes place “downstairs” at Gallery #2.

a.     Locate the Primary Sludge Pump ON/OFF switch {tag nos. 1102HS1100 & 1102HS1200} and turn to ON.

3.     Confirm Remote Control  at SCADA workstationStep 3 takes place at any available SCADA workstation.

a.     Login and go to Primary Sludge Automated Control System screen.

b.     Check that lead sludge pump is in-service.

c.     Check that lag sludge pump is out-of-service.

4.     Observe Pump OperationStep 4 takes place “downstairs” at Gallery #2.

a.     Verify that lead pump is in operation.

b.     Check for leaks, excessive noise and vibration at the pump.

c.     Check for air lock in the pump.  If the pump is air locked, flush and drain the piping.

5.     Record Data to Operator’s Log Book:  Record Primary Transfer Pump Start Up activities to the log book with other entries for the day.  Include the following in the entry:

a.     Operator(s) that performed the Start Up SOP.

b.     Note conditions of pump, piping and valves.

c.     Note the approximate time that the SOP was completed.

d.     Note any damage, wear, or required maintenance on equipment.

Data & Records Management, Calculations, Forms, Reports
Data & Records Management, Calculations, Forms, Reports:
  • Update log book.
  • Update maintenance records (if applicable).
  • Report any maintenance or attention that is required.
Limits/Criteria for Data/Results
Limits/Criteria for Data/Results:

Sludge is drained from the Primary Clarifier(s) to the Gravity Thickener.  Clarifier(s) are drained for maintenance or service.
