1 Chemical Ordering and Receiving

This SOP covers the procedures for ordering bulk chemicals at the El Estero Wastewater Treatment Plant. The bulk chemicals include ferrous chloride, sodium bisulfite, sodium hypochlorite, dry polymer, and miscellaneous chemicals.

Standardized procedures are necessary to maximize the storage capacity in the respective chemical storage tanks.

If Water Distribution is expecting a delivery of hypochlorite, direct the driver to the Desalination Chemical Yard. Open the gate for the driver, deactivate the alarm with the fob, and notify the Water Department.

Operations are responsible for receiving the chemicals.  If a forklift is required to handle the delivery, the Operator must be forklift certified.

Procedure

Follow these procedures when ordering chemicals:

  1. Operations will check the chemical inventory daily.
  2. Check the Status Board for special instructions regarding chemicals.
  3. Place an order for bulk chemical when the tank(s) reach a level where they can receive a full load of the chemical. NOTE: Project chemical usage until the order arrives.
  4. Get purchase order list and vendor contact information in the Operations Office.

Follow these procedures when receiving chemicals:

  1. Operations checks with the delivery driver and inspects the load.
  2. Check the Status Board again and confirm an order has been placed.
  3. Confirm contents of the tank with the driver.
  4. Direct the driver to the correct chemical receiving station.
  5. Open suction on all tanks receiving chemical.
  6. Once the chemical has been offloaded, update the Status Board.
  7. Submit the chemical invoice to the Accounting Assistant.
