Schools and other organizations are taken on a tour of the WWTP.  The tour guide is an operator.

Purpose and scope
Purpose and scope:

The general purpose of a guided tour is to educate interested individuals/organizations/groups on wastewater treatment at the El Estero WWTP.

Health & Safety Warnings
Health & Safety Warnings:
  • Be aware of construction, processes, chemicals, etc., that could be hazardous to guests.
  • Be aware that guests are unfamiliar with tripping hazards, etc. that are common place to the operators.
  • Consider the age of the guests on the tour.  Young children may need more supervision than adults while on a tour.

If guests are properly supervised, this should not be an issue.

Potential Interferences
Potential Interferences:

Scheduling must be clearly communicated between the Water Resources Department and El Estero WWTP personnel.

Familiarity with the WWTP layout and processes.

Procedure
Procedure:
1.    Scheduling: The outside organization schedules a tour through the Water Resources Department (Madeline).
a.    The Water Resources Department coordinates the tour schedule with WWTP personnel (David Lewis).
b.    David confirms the date and time, and assigns an operator to be a Tour Guide.
c.    The operator is notified of the scheduled tour.
 
2.    Day of the Tour: 
a.    A representative of the tour group signs in at the front desk.
b.    The Tour Guide generally follows the “WWTP Tour Guideline Script”, but will customize information for the group.
c.    The tour typically concludes at the restrooms so the guests can wash their hands.
d.    If a sample is tested in the lab, the Tour Guide should schedule lab personnel to clean the equipment and the area.
e.    A representative of the tour group signs out at the front desk.
f.     The Tour Guide makes an entry in the Operator’s Log Book
