10 High Influent Flows

This SOP covers procedures to be performed when it is anticipated that the El Estero Wastewater Treatment Plant will receive high influent flows.

SOP Identification Number
SOP Identification Number:
10 High Influent Flows
Definitions
Definitions:

High Flows - Sustained flows over 18 MGD (million gallons per day.)

Cautions
Cautions:

Overnight staffing will be necessary if flows are sustained.

Procedure
Procedure:

The following steps should be taken when planning for high flows:

  1. Put all available tanks in service.
  2. Confirm that all available bar screens are in Automatic mode.
  3. Put both grit pumps in Hand.
  4. Confirm primary sludge pumps are working.

Once the plant begins to receive the anticipated high flows, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Closely monitor the grit system. Monitor the level in the grit hopper. If the hopper is full, call MARBORG to dump the hopper. If MARBORG is unavailable, use a fork lift or loader to push the roll-off bin under the hopper.
  2. Increase gravity thickener pump rate.
  3. Suspend belt filter press operation.
  4. Stack rigs at the digester to increase storage capacity, but only if room is available in the digesters.
  5. Monitor disinfection and dechlorination.
  6. Monitor chemical inventory.
